The construction of a group of temples and a massive architectural elements built by the kings of ancient Egypt began during the region of Sunusert I in the Middle Kingdom (around 2000–1700 BCE) and continued to the Ptolemaic period(305-30 BCE).

The temple within its walls are two small temples; The first was dedicated to the god Khonsu and dates back to the tenth dynasty, while the second was dedicated to the worship of the god Amun and dates back to the era of Ramses III.the main parts contain the precinte of Amun-Re, precint of Mut, precint of Montu and temple of Amenhotep IV.

In addition to the mastery of the ancient Egyptians in the use of stone, which is evident everywhere in the temple, the Egyptians excelled in engraving the inscriptions covering its walls, and carving the statues that adorn it.

The Great Hypostyle Hall has about 134 pillars and is the most famous and largest hall in the world. The height of these huge columns is 15 meters, except for the twelve middle columns, which are 21 meters high.

The temple is located on the eastern mainland of Luxor. Like most ancient Egyptian temples, the axis of the temple was east-west. The ancient Egyptian temples were a model of the universe, so the design of the temple reflects the path of the Lord of the Sun across the sky, and the temple is unique in the presence of a north-south axis separate from the rest of the temples, facing another temple. The two temples were linked by a road lined with sphinx-shaped statues known as the Way of the Rams, and this road was used in one of the most important celebrations of the ancient Egyptian calendar, the Opet Festival.
